I don’t have land or lots of money I can’t have a homestead…. FALSE
That’s right, that statement is false! Why? Because you honestly don’t need a ton of space, land, or money to get started homesteading. Homesteading is a mentality more than it is anything else. It’s figuring out ways to use what you already have to make what you need.
Homesteading is reusing, repurposing, doing it yourself, choosing better than what society tells us. Homesteading is the peace that comes from growing your own garden, picking your flowers from your yard for the centerpiece on the table. Raising meat birds for your nourishment throughout the year. Homesteading is finding peace and joy in the simple things. It’s letting go of the way your told life is supposed to be lived and just living it so that it brings you joy and fulfillment.
Homesteading is simple. You don’t have to have acres of land, we are currently on just over 1 acre of property and I am able to grow enough veggies and produce for our family of 6 and also put food up for winter. I can a lot of things for our winter stock. We have 13 hens and 2 roosters that keep us in constant supply of eggs and during the summer months i make sure to preserve a few dozen eggs using the water glassing method. By waterglassing the eggs I’m able to preserve about 18 dozen eggs in our basement for use during the winter when my girls take a break. We also have 2 momma goats here on our homestead who both kidded twins in January of this year. With both mommas producing milk, we are getting just over 1/2 a gallon each day. This is a great source of calcium for my kiddos and they don’t have any issues digesting it because goats milk is A2.
As fears money goes well we don’t have a lot of it so we have to get creative. We use each month to budget material we might need for a larger project and buy the materials a little at a time. We also try to see if we can trade people for things or see if someone has scrap that we might be able to use. We use a lot of free pallets and
I’m going to let you in on a few of my tips for getting started homesteading wherever you are!
Learn about gardening for your zone- you can watch YouTube videos, read books, join a local garden group. Learn the soil and how to amend soils. All of this can be applied when you get to a bigger piece of land one day if you so choose but even if your staying with a small backyard or even a little patio garden you’ll learn so much!
See if your area allows chickens if so DO IT! You wont regret that fresh egg in the morning and they are quite fun!
Pick up a new skills - there are plenty of videos and how to’s out there. Find something that you would like to learn and teach yourself that might be cooking from scratch, sourdough, canning, gardening, building, pottery, animal husbandry. It all pretty simple with some practice and dedication to learning. Just because you didn’t grow up learning it doesn’t mean you can’t teach yourself.
Buy local, support your local farmer or farmers market. It’s a simple thing to do but makes a huge impact in your community.
Ask fellow friends if they will teach you what they know. You’ll be surprised how many people are willing to help and teach. Even go shadow and learn in person.
These are all ways you can incorporate the homesteading mentality into your everyday and learn to be just a little more self sufficient.
